PRISON LITERATURE: AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF HABIB JALIB’SPOETRY OF INCARCERATION

Abstract

Prison literature, or "Zindani Adab," refers to writings created during incarceration or those that explore
themes of imprisonment, even if composed in a free environment. This genre encompasses prose and
poetry directly tied to the experience of captivity, spanning academic, scholarly, and political domains.
The defining feature is the author's connection to the narrative of imprisonment. Since its inception,
Pakistan has faced persistent instability, exploited by undemocratic forces. Among those who resisted was
the revolutionary poet Habib Jalib, who fearlessly opposed social and political injustices. Throughout
Pakistan's history, from its formation to periods of martial law and democracy, Jalib's voice remained
unyielding despite repeated imprisonment. A prisoner only to his conscience, he rejected compromise and
boldly advocated for social progress.Jalib's prison poetry, crafted without the tools of pen and paper,
offers profound insights into Pakistan's socio-political struggles. His work not only highlights the pain of
oppression but also inspires future generations, serving as a testament to resilience and the pursuit of
truth in the face of adversity
